All about kids’ vitamins
Is your child a ‘picky-eater’? If yes, you are one among the many parents who are worried about their children’s eating habits. If yours is a vegetarian family or if your child has a poor diet which is devoid of iron rich food materials, then you have no other option but to turn towards children’s vitamins.
Studies indicate that infants, who are exposed to nothing but breast milk, should get 200 IU of Vitamin D per day. Similarly, older kids should take in 500ml of Vitamin D fortified milk, if not exposed to proper sunlight. Children need iron in order to prevent themselves from falling prey to anaemia. After the age of six months, ensure that your child is fed with iron-fortified cereals. Older kids can be made to eat meats, fish, legumes, breads and cereals as iron supplements.
Calcium is yet another important mineral, that is essential for healthy bones and teeth. Children who love to drink milk and easily eat other dairy products usually do not suffer from any calcium deficiency. But, if your child simply refuses to drink milk, let him have calcium fortified orange juice. Easily chewable calcium tablets are also there at your rescue.
Your child also requires fluoride supplements, but only in required amounts. Since too much of fluoride can stain your child’s teeth, it is better to consult a dentist before treating him with fluoride. Multivitamin drops meant for infants contain Vitamin A, C, and D. In certain cases, they might also contain iron and other nutrients, such as thiamine, riboflavin, Vitamin B12, niacin, pyridoxine, and Vitamin E. For older children, they are made available in the form of chewable tablets. Try those pills on which their favourite cartoon characters are imprinted. However, keep in mind that multivitamins should not be fully relied upon as sole nutrient sources since most of them lack calcium.
