All about the art of ART
October 6, 2008
Assisted reproductive technology (ART) refers to all the several variations that are made to order the unique condition of the patient with the result of having a baby. These modern techniques are generally paired with the traditional infertility treatment therapies such as drugs. More and more childless couples turn to ART, since its success rate is one out of every three cases. ART is generally considered as the very last resort of parenting a child, as it is quite expensive. There are many methods of assisted reproductive technology methods to choose from.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most frequently used ART method. It was more than a couple of decades ago that the world’ first foetus got fertilised outside the mother’s womb through IVF technology. Here eggs from a woman combine with her spouse’s sperm inside the laboratory. The embryos, resultant from fertilisation, are placed back to the mother’s womb. It is found to be the most successful among ART methods.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is yet another ART method in which just one out of the many sperm cells gets artificially placed inside the wife’s egg using a microscopic needle. After successful fertilisation, the embryo is returned to the uterus.
In Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) and Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT), the eggs that are artificially fertilised with the spouse’s sperm get surgically injected into the wife’s fallopian tubes using a fibre-thin tube. Here embryo gets implanted in the uterus walls naturally.
If by any chance, a woman is not able to conceive using her own eggs, then doctors make use of donor eggs. These eggs get artificially united with her husband’s sperm and are then implanted into your womb. The same procedure can be done with a donated sperm as well. In this case, the child delivered by the pregnant woman will not be biologically her own.
Surrogacy is yet another means of assisted reproductive technology in which another woman carries your fertilised embryo and delivers your baby. The child will be biologically yours but not delivered by you.
