Causes of Amenorrhoea
October 16, 2008
Amenorrhoea is that condition in which a woman fails to menstruate regularly. “Primary amenorrhoea” refers to that situation in which a woman has not menstruated at all. “Secondary amenorrhoea” occurs when her periods cease after having made regular appearance for months or sometimes, years.
Generally, a girl matures to a woman by the time she reaches sixteen. If she happens to have a very athletic body or if she is very thin, periods are likely to get delayed. Though rare, some girls might mature late due to no obvious reason. However, if a girl of sixteen has not menstruated it is better to consult a physician. It is because; there is a rare chance of hormonal irregularity. The girl is in risk zone if her breasts also do not exhibit any sign of growth.
Most women experience a sudden miss in menstrual cycle, at some stage of their reproductive years. In such a situation, the first thing to do is to check whether you are pregnant. If not pregnant, the other possible reasons are increased stress, over strained exercises, obesity etc. Amenorrhoea may also be caused as a side effect of some other medications. Breast-feeding might also delay menstruation. If you have been taking oral contraceptives for long and have suddenly stopped it, then also you are likely to miss periods. Middle-aged women who are nearing menopause also get delayed periods. Imposing a crash diet on yourself and losing large amount of weight as a result of such a diet can also interfere adversely with your menstrual cycle.
More serious reasons for amenorrhoea are tumours, cysts and disorders in the pituitary gland. Postpartum pituitary necrosis is yet another disorder that result in the absence of periods. This is the situation in which a woman fails to menstruate after her delivery. In this case, pituitary gland might have failed either partially or completely during the delivery.
