Causes of Calluses

February 25, 2009

Calluses are an extremely common skin irregularity that are generally found at the heels, ball-of-the-foot and on the inside part of the big toe. They are formed by the accumulation of dead skin cells. Over the passage of time, these cells get hardened.

These dead cells thicken an entire area of the affected foot. Callus formation is a natural mechanism implemented by the body to protect the foot from excessive pressure and continuous friction.

Certain external factors are also found to contribute to the development of calluses. These factors include high-heeled shoes, small-sized shoes, obesity, irregularities in the walking mode, flat feet, high-arched feet and the loss of the fat pad placed at the bottom of the foot.

Wearing shoes and sandals without using socks is also found to lead to friction on the feet. Improperly fitting socks can also cause trouble. Calluses appear on the hands as well if the palms are exposed to constant pressure caused by using certain tools.

It is common among the affected people to cut away or trim the calluses with a razor blade or knife. This is not at all advisable and it is not the proper mode of treatment. Such an attempt to cut away the calluses, often leads to increased trouble, as infection from injury is likely.

Diabetic patients should strictly keep away from this method, as any injury made on their body by the use of sharp tools like blade can be fatal.

The right treatment of callus is by using an orthotic. It helps in the effective redistribution of weight and takes away the excessive pressure from specific spots.

However, it is essential to ensure that the orthotic is made from shock-absorbing materials that reduce friction. It is advisable to consider surgery as the last resort. A foot specialist should be consulted, if the problem persists even after home treatments.
