Causes of erectile dysfunction

The inability to attain a firm erection necessary for an effective sexual intercourse is termed as erectile dysfunction. This condition is one among the many causes that result in impotence. Erectile dysfunction can relate to complete inability to achieve erection, occasional incapability to attain erection or ability to attain only brief erections. The popular treatment against erectile dysfunction includes those using vacuum devices and injectable drugs. The oral drug sildenafil citrate (Viagra) is the most popular medication. Successful treatment of this irregularity results in improved sexual satisfaction.

In older men, erectile dysfunction usually occurs due to physical irregularities. Certain ailments such as kidney disease, chronic alcoholism, multiple sclerosis, atherosclerosis etc and injuries can result in this problem. Impotence might also be due to the side effect of some medication. Any injury made to the nerves of the penis or restricts the blood flow to this region has the potential to cause erectile dysfunction. However, it is found that men who are sixty-five plus are likely to experience this irregularity naturally.

A precise pattern of events need to be followed for the attainment of effective erection. A disruption in this pattern is the most common cause of erectile dysfunction. Majority of men who are highly diabetic also experience this disorder. A proper erection demands production of adequate nerve impulses in the brain, spinal column and also in the area around the penis. As a result of these impulses, the related muscles, fibrous tissues, veins and arteries in and near the corpora cavernosa  also need to respond correctly.

Lifestyle choices also play an important role in ensuring the attainment of sexual pleasure. Smoking, obesity and lack of proper exercise are also found to result in erectile dysfunction. Psychological factors such as stress, guilt and anxiety together with surgical injuries made on the penis nerves as part of prostrate surgery is also found to make a negative impact on effective erection. Many common medications done in order to cure blood pressure and certain other drugs such as antihistamines, antidepressants, tranquilizers, appetite suppressants etc might also cause erectile dysfunction.
