Causes of lower back pain

Most low back pain is triggered by more than one cause. A combination of health hazards such as over strained muscles, injured muscle ligaments, disc irregularities result in lower back pain.
In most cases, a pain in lower back signals some damage done to the spinal system. If left untreated, injury and re-injury that happens to the lower back jeopardize the entire spinal structure. Once thrown out of balance, it is difficult to harmonize the spinal configuration. Spinal deformities, including curvature problems, also lead to low back pain in some people.
Osteoarthritis is yet another reason for lower back pain. This is a common disorder found among the older generation. Osteoarthritis generally affects the small facet joints of the spine. When other body joints such as hips are affected with osteoporosis, the person is forced to limp as he walks. Limped leg causes strain in the lower back region and in that case also, pain is resulted in this region.
Spondylolysis and other related vertebral defects also leads to severe back pain as one vertebra tends to slide over another when engaged in certain strenuous activities. Vertebral fractures caused by accidents cause severe blow to the spine. In such cases also the spine gets compressed leading to heavy lower back pain.
Compression fractures are the most common cause of low back pain among postmenopausal women. This complaint is mostly found in women suffering from osteoporosis. Both men and women are likely to develop back pain due to the long-term use of corticosteroid. People suffering from osteoporosis should be extremely cautious not to exert even minimal force on the spine. Even a sneeze is enough to result in compression fracture in osteoporosis patients.
Pelvic inflammatory diseases, aortic aneurysm, gallbladder and urinary disorders, prostrate irregularities etc are some of the other body ailments that also cause pain in the region around the lower back. Bacterial infection is yet another cause of lower back pain. In this case, infectious bacteria get carried to the spinal column through the bloodstream from some other part of the body.
