Ringworm sounds pretty bad. As if some ugly, ring-shaped worm creature was crawling around under somebody’s skin. Even worse, it’s common among infants and young children.
Fact is, ringworm isn’t hard to identify or treat. Actually, if you just left it alone and didn’t treat it at all, your body would develop a natural immunity over a few months or more.
It is, however, still best to treat ringworm, to remove the blotches on the skin and help the body out. Since it’s so easy to do so, most people opt to get ringworm out of their lives.
If ringworm of the body covers a large area, is severe or doesn’t respond to over-the-counter medicine, you may need a prescription-strength topical or oral medication. These include:
Topical cure for ringworm
· Econazole (Spectazole)
· Miconazole (Monistat-Derm)
Oral cure for ringworm
· Itraconazole (Sporanox)
· Fluconazole (Diflucan)
· Terbinafine (Lamisil)
· Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
Side effects from oral medications include gastrointestinal upset, rash and abnormal liver functioning. Taking other medications, such as antacid therapies for ulcer disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), may interfere with the absorption of these drugs. Oral medications for ringworm may alter the effectiveness of warfarin, an anticoagulant drug that decreases the clotting ability of your blood.
Other cure for ringworm
Ringworm usually responds well to self-care within 4 weeks without having to see a doctor.
· Keep your skin clean and dry.
· Apply over-the-counter antifungal or drying powders, lotions, or creams. Those that contain miconazole, clotrimazole, or similar ingredients are often effective.
· Wash sheets and nightclothes every day while infected.
A severe or persistent infection may require treatment by a doctor. Antifungal pills may be given and are necessary if your hair is infected. Prescription antifungal skin medications, such as ketoconazole, are stronger than over-the-counter products and may be needed. Antibiotics may also be needed to treat related bacterial infections.
Infected pets also should be treated.
