Different types of Rashes

January 1, 2009

A rash is medically termed as dermatitis. It relates to a swelling or irritation caused on the skin surface. A rash can be described as red, dry, scaly, and itchy irregularity. Rashes can be in the form of lumps, bumps, blisters, or even pimples. Most people might have rashes in their lives. When you were a baby, you are likely to have had diaper rash!
Rashes need to be taken seriously when they are followed by fever. If the rashes are the outcome of some allergies, immediate medical aid is necessary.

Hives, also called as urticaria, are those pale and reddish swellings that are formed as a reaction to a chemical called histamine, which acts as an allergen. A virus that has made its way into the body through food, medicine or bug bite can result in this disorder.

Eczema also called atopic dermatitis is a common rash found in kids. In extreme cases, this irregularity results in of red, scaly, and swollen skin all over the body. Irritant contact dermatitis is caused when the body comes into contact with an irritating element. Chemicals found in soaps or detergents can irritate the skin. Exposure to severe sunlight might also result in red and swollen rashes. These rashes get itchy as they start to heal.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a rash that is caused solely through the contact with an allergen. Rubber, hair dye, and nickel are the most common allergens. Urushiol, an oil or resin found in poison ivy, oak, and sumac, also might result in this kind of red, scaly, crusty rash.

Some rashes occur soon after the irregularity has occurred on the skin surface. Where as, some others take several days to occur. A rash should not be scratched, however itchy it might be. If scratched, a rash might take a longer time to heal completely. Moreover, a scratched rash might leave a scar behind. It is advisable to consult a dermatologist, as a precise diagnosis is essential for proper treatment.
