Food to be avoided during pregnancy
Pregnancy brings with it many dos and don’ts. Of course, it might be a bit tough but you are ready to go to any extent to ensure the health of your baby. Well, that is the magic of motherhood.
Certain food materials need to be discarded by pregnant women in a particular form but the same foodstuff can be taken in another form. Cheese is an example.
Out of all the cheese varieties, mould-ripened cheese should be avoided. It is that kind of cheese which has a blue layer in it. In order to be on the safer side, make sure that the cheese variety you opt for is labelled as pasteurised.
Properly cooked eggs can be eaten. However, pregnant women should discard undercooked and raw eggs. Let the eggs boil till both the white and the yolk are solidified. Not all the fishes are good to be eaten by expectant moms. It is wise to keep away from shark, swordfish and marlin whereas the intake of tuna needs to be restricted to two tuna steaks a week. This is because these fish varieties are abundant in mercury. If consumed too much, mercury might harm your baby’s nervous system. It is also advisable to limit the consumption of oily fishes such as mackerel, sardines and trout to once a week.
Raw meats and seafood need to be discarded as there intake increases the risk of salmonella poisoning. Deli meats including hot dogs might contain listeria bacteria that are sure to harm the baby. Compared to refrigerated seafood stuff, canned versions are safer. Though liver is a granary of iron, it also contains Vitamin A in abundance. Excess supply of Vitamin A is not good for the foetus.
Not to mention, alcohol consumption is certainly dangerous to the baby, as it will result in the child developing Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). This syndrome is found to result in mentally sick babies.
