Health risks in homosexual men
January 19, 2009
All of us are prone to develop health problems, regardless of our sexual orientation. However, certain health disorders are found to be common among gay men. In its strictest sense, the term ‘gay’ refers to homosexual men.
Gonorrhea is a disorder that is found to be common among homosexuals. This disease gets transmitted primarily through unsafe anal intercourse and through oral sex. The infection occurs at the penis, the rectum and the throat.
Genital and anal warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Genital warts that appear on the penis are common in both heterosexual and gay men. However, anal warts are found to be more common in gay men. Anal warts are primarily the outcome of straight penis-to-rectum contact during sex.
Hepatitis A is yet another infection that is transmitted through the oral-fecal route. Sexually transmitted Hepatitis A mostly occurs in gay men. Most people remain unaware of the preventive vaccination that can be taken against hepatitis A. Various other bacterial and parasitic infections are also likely to be spread through oral-fecal route.
Hepatitis B is almost similar to HIV, in terms of transmission. However, Hepatitis B is far more infectious in nature. Sharing drug needles, oral and anal intercourse etc result in this sexual disorder. Vaccinations have proved to be effective in preventing Hepatitis B.
Though most of the patients who suffer from HIV are heterosexuals, AIDS get transmitted sexually between men as well. HIV transmission occurs among gay men mainly through unprotected anal intercourse and sometimes through oral sex (particularly with ejaculation).
Studies indicate that the virus (HPV) that causes genital and anal warts is connected with certain forms of cancer. Anal HPV infection that ultimately results in anal cancer primarily occurs through unprotected anal intercourse and also through penis-to-rectum contact during sex. Anal cancer is found to more common among men with damaged immune systems. Smoking is likely to enhance the risk of anal cancer as well. Though rare, HPV infection that occur on the penis result in penile cancer.
