High Risk Pregnancy

Every pregnancy has some risks, but there are more dangers to your health and the health of your fetus with a high risk pregnancy. The causes can be conditions you already have or conditions you develop.
They also include being pregnant with more than one baby, previous problem pregnancies, or being over age 35.
It’s scary to hear that your pregnancy is at risk. You may feel that you have lost your dreams of a worry-free pregnancy. Remember that not all high-risk situations are the same. Not all women with high-risk pregnancies develop complications. Talk to your caregiver about the risks that are affecting your pregnancy.
In many cases, you may be monitored more carefully, but otherwise things will proceed normally. In other cases, your caregiver may suggest specific treatments, extra visits to specialized clinics, daily home monitoring or hospitalization. Your caregiving team will explain to you what model of care is best for you and why.
Most women will see one healthcare provider during pregnancy, either an obstetrician, a midwife, or a nurse practitioner. Women who have a medical problem may need to see a medical specialist as well. Women diagnosed with a high-risk pregnancy may also need the expert advice and care of a perinatologist. A perinatologist is a medical doctor (obstetrician) who specializes in the care of women who are at high risk for having problems during pregnancy. Perinatologists care for women who have pre-existing medical problems as well as women who develop complications during pregnancy.
High risk pregnancy # 1 - Preeclampsia and Eclampsia - Preeclampsia is a syndrome that includes high blood pressure, urinary protein, and changes in blood levels of liver enzymes during pregnancy.

High risk pregnancy # 3 - HIV/AIDS kills or damages cells of the body’s immune system, progressively destroying the body’s ability to fight infections and certain cancers.
High risk pregnancy # 4 - Preterm Labor is labor that begins before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Because the baby is not fully grown at this time, it may not be able to survive outside the womb. Health care providers will often take steps to try to stop labor if it occurs before this time.
High risk pregnancy # 5 - Other medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart, breathing, or kidney problems can become more serious during a woman’s pregnancy. Regular prenatal care can help ensure a healthier pregnancy for a woman and her baby.
