If you experience cold sore outbreaks, you may be getting very tired of having to run off to the store every time you feel a cold sore coming on.
Fortunately there are some home remedies for cold sores that you can use without having to make a store run.
Cold sores, are caused be herpes simplex virus1 HSV-1, which is related to but different from the virus that causes genital herpes. Cold sores first appear 3 to 10 days after exposure to the virus and last up to 5 weeks.
Home remedies for cold sores tip 1 - Watch what you eat. The herpes simplex virus needs the amino acid arginine for its metabolism. So if you’re prone to cold sores, limit your intake of arginine-rich foods such as chocolate, cola, peas, cereals, peanuts, gelatin, cashews and beer, advises D’Anne Kleinsmith, M.D., a cosmetic dermatologist at William Beaumont Hospital near Detroit. Of course, during an outbreak, eliminate these foods altogether.
Home remedies for cold sores tip 2 - Applying Witch Hazel on sores will give you some relief. Dip your moist index finger in powdered common salt and press the sore for 30 seconds using this index finger. Gently rub aloe vera gel or oil on the sores. Lemon balm extract helps to reduce symptoms and speeds up healing. Those having weak immune system will take more time to recover and may face more severe consequences.
Home remedies for cold sores tip 3 - SAGE and GINGER - A paste or tea made from sage and ginger, applied frequently with a cotton ball, often clears up sores quickly. If you can find sage and ginger in a herbal tea bag, just wet it and hold it to the sore.
Tip 4 - Using zinc has been reported to reduce the duration of cold sores. Applied topically, it speeds healing.
Home remedies for cold sores tip 5 - Dab your lips and other susceptible areas with a sunscreen of at least 15 SPF to prevent the occurrence of cold sores.
