Home Remedies for Seborrheic Dermatitis
June 4, 2008
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common type of eczema where the oil glands of the skin are affected. Seborrheic dermatitis is derived from the term “Seborrhea” which means “flow of oil”.
There are two types of glands in our skin: sweat glands and oil glands. The sweat glands release sweat as a temperature regulator for the body as well as eliminate toxic waste. The oil glands produce an oily substance for moisturizing the skin and to keep the hair smooth and silky. Before you rush off to buy another over the counter treatment, you have to first understand the basics and what you can do to help healing.
Despite many attempts, researchers have been unable to identify a precise cause of seborrheic dermatitis. The most popular theory is that it is caused by a sensitivity to yeast on the skin, although research data is inconclusive; however, people with the condition often respond to antifungal medications.
Home remedies for seborrheic dermatitis tip 1 - Treating seborrheic dermatitis consists of using antifungal shampoos that contain zinc pyrithione, selenium sulphide or ketoconazole. The shampoo must be massaged onto the scalp and other affected areas and left for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Other shampoo ingredients equally useful are salicylic acid, coal tar and sulphur.
Home remedies for seborrheic dermatitis tip 2 - Shampoos containing either coal tar, salicylic acid, selenium sulfide or zinc pyrithione can be used against seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. The shampoo should be applied 2-3 times a week and should be rinsed off only after 5 minutes of application.
Home remedies for seborrheic dermatitis tip 3 - The use of fenugreek seeds is one of the most important remedies in the treatment of dandruff. Two tablespoons of these seeds should be soaked overnight in water and ground into a fine paste in the morning. This paste should be applied all over the scalp and left for half an hour.
