Hormones and headache

The symptoms of hormonal headache are quite similar to migraine headache and therefore a hormonal headache is quite often misunderstood as migraine headache. Hormonal headache symptoms include pain on one side of the head and a person becomes oversensitive to bright light and loud noise. Person experiences nausea and vomiting too.

Hormonal headache usually onset when there are hormonal fluctuations in the body and that usually occurs when a women enters her adolescence. It may also occur during menopause and pre-menopause periods.

The commonest reason for the hormonal headache is when estrogen levels suddenly shoots up or suddenly dips in the body. During ovulation, estrogen and other hormone levels shoot up and during menses estrogen and progesterone level dips. Its this time when these hormonal headaches occur.

Intake of oral contraceptives can trigger hormonal headaches due to triggering of estrogen levels in some women whereas in other women it can reduce the frequency of hormonal headaches.

In addition to the premenstrual cycle and pregnancy, hormonal headaches may also occur during early period of childbirth when hormone levels in the body changes.

Premenstrual syndrome symptoms like acne outbreak, fatigue, emotional anxiety, constipation and food cravings may trigger hormonal headache. Menstrual hormonal headache occurs in the first or second day of menstrual cycle and continues till the end of menstruation.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are a treatment to hormonal headaches. Aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen are other options available for treatment.

Although you can treat hormonal headache by taking medicines but nothing can beat when controlling or treating it in a natural way.

Yoga and breathing exercises helps in maintaining proper hormone levels in the body and thereby reduces the chances of hormonal headaches. Maintaining stable blood sugar levels by following a balanced diet regime also prevents hormonal headache.

Consume fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Alcohol, caffeine and sugar triggers hormonal level in the body, so avoid consuming them. Drink plenty of water to clear away toxins from your body. Have an adequate sleep since a disturbed sleep can trigger or aggravate hormonal headache.
