The term sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has a wider range of meaning when compared to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or venereal diseases. Venereal diseases are ailments that are likely to be transmitted from humans or animals through sexual contact, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex and anal sex. But, a person can serve as a carrier of a sexually transmitted infection though he does not exhibit any signs of the disease. Though no symptoms are portrayed, an infected person is potentially capable of infecting others.
Sexually transmitted infections get transmitted through childbirth and breast feeding. A person is also likely to be infected if he happens to use the drug needle that has been used by an infected person. However, the most major means of transmission is person-to-person sexual contact. It is found that there are more than thirty types of sexually transmissible bacteria, viruses and other parasites.
The most common ailments that are caused by the transfer of sexually transmitted infections include genital herpes, genital warts, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, gonorrhoea, chlamydial infection, syphilis, trichomoniasis, chancroid and hepatitis B infection.
Most of the sexually transmitted infections affect both men and women. But, in most cases, the infections wreck more havoc in women. A pregnant woman who has been tested positive with some or other venereal infection is most likely to transmit the disorder to the baby.
One should never hesitate to bring a case of sexually transmitted infection under a medical expert’s care. Bacterial infections generally get treated with antibiotics. Though medications can keep it under control, it is hard to provide complete cure to viral infections.
Usage of latex condoms while engaging in sexual relationships minimizes the risk of catching sexually transmitted infections. However, it should be remembered that condoms do not eliminate the risk of sexually transmitted infections completely. All individuals should strictly make safe sex a part of their lifestyle.
