How dangerous can Chlamydia be

November 28, 2008

The term Chlamydia refers to a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Though considered to be one with silent symptoms, Chlamydia will result in serious reproductive and other health-related problems, if left untreated.

In women, unattended infection will spread deep into the uterus or fallopian tubes easily and will result in pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID). In such a situation, the fallopian tubes, uterus, and surrounding tissues will be permanently damaged. Moreover, women who are infected with Chlamydia are five times more prone to become HIV infected, if exposed. It is advisable for all sexually active women and pregnant mothers to get a screening test for Chlamydia at least once a year. Women with multiple sex partners are more likely to be infected. Chlamydia related complications are rare in men. In some males, infection spreads to the epididymis and result in pain, fever and sometimes, sterility.

If a pregnant woman gets Chlamydial infections, premature delivery is most likely. Infants born to mothers who suffer from Chlamydia are likely to have infections in their eyes and respiratory tracts. In certain cases, it leads to infant pneumonia and conjunctivitis.

Chlamydia gets diagnosed through laboratory tests. This disease can be cured by antibiotic medication.  The most commonly prescribed treatments against Chlamydia include a single dose of azithromycin or a week of doxycycline.  If a person is found to be infected with Chlamydia, all the sex partners need to be tested. People who have been found to be infected with Chlamydia should restrain from sexual relationships until they have been fully cured. If not, re-infection is likely to occur. Women whose sex partners have not been fully cured are considered to be more prone to Chlamydial infection. Getting multiple infections results in grave reproductive complications including infertility.

Getting involved only in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a secure partner who has been uninfected is the most effective way of preventing Chlamydia.
