How dangerous is Gonorrhoea
February 6, 2009
Gonorrhoea is a common sexually transmitted disease. Being an STD, the infection gets transmitted from one person to another through sexual activities. Studies indicate that there is a steady rise in the number of patients who suffer from this disease in the last two decades. In the United States alone, it is estimated that more than seven lakh fresh gonorrhoeal cases are being reported during a year.
It is unfortunate that more than five percent of the total affected population remains unaware of this disease, but act as carriers. Gonorrhoeal infection is found to be extremely common in particular groups. Adolescents and young adults remain the most affected lot. Economically lower class people who lead their lives in urban areas are also found to be more prone to this disease. It has also been revealed by studies that majority of the infected people are drug users.
The infectious bacterium that causes gonorrhoea is called Neisseria gonorrhoea. Vaginal, oral, and anal sexual relations with an infected person lead to this disease. Women are generally found to be under increased risk of infection. Men are found to have a twenty percent chance of being infected when they have sexual relations with a woman who is infected with gonorrhoea. On the contrary, a woman has fifty percent chance of getting the infection if she engages in sexual relationship with an infected man.
An infected mother is most likely to transmit gonorrhoea to her newborn baby during vaginal childbirth. The symptoms of this disorder usually get manifested within ten days of exposure to the infectious germs. In some women, it might take up to three weeks for the symptoms to be shown.
Gonorrhoeal infection may lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and might in turn result in infertility. Frequent urge to urinate, coloured vaginal discharge, bleeding between menstrual periods, itching and burning sensation in the vaginal region etc are the common symptoms found in women. Pain during urination and yellow coloured penile discharge are the symptoms that occur in men. Irritation of the mucous membranes in the eyes is the common symptom found in newborns affected with this disease.
