How nutritious are guavas

guavasIf you thought that oranges were the richest source of vitamin C, you need to think again. You need to think of guava. One guava provides 165 mg of vitamin C while one orange provides mere 69 mg of vitamin C.

According to some researchers guava is a super fruit and in fact is the most nutritious fruit. Guava is mainly produced in India, Brazil and Mexico.

Guavas are rich in vitamins A and C, dietary fiber, vitamin B3, potassium, magnesium and anti-oxidant pigments such as carotenoids and polyphenols.

Ripe guavas contain more anti-oxidant source than raw guavas. Guava has the highest concentration of anti-oxidant lycopene, which helps in fighting prostrate cancer.

One guava provides 688 mg of potassium while a potassium rich banana can only provide you with 254 mg of potassium. It is believed that potassium helps in lowering blood pressure. It also helps in keeping the skin glowing, fresh and wrinkle free.

Apart from guava as a very beneficial fruit, its leaves and seeds are equally beneficial. Seeds contain beneficial polyunsaturated fatty acids. Guava leaves are rich source of astringents.

Astringents help in dissolving the oil in the skin thus tightening the loosened skin. These are alkaline in nature and fight against bacterial infections. The disinfectant property of guava helps to fight against diarrhea and dysentery.

The fiber content in guava maintains a good digestive system, clean intestine and reduces the risk of developing colon cancer. Vitamin B content of guava prevents the oxidation process of the cell, thus retaining moisture and works as anti-aging.

Vitamin C stimulates production of collagen, which helps in the health of cartilage, blood vessels, joints and skin. It also has anti-histamine properties, which protects the skin from diseases like psoriasis, hives and eczema.

Today the highly nutritious guava juice is enjoyed around the world. Apart from being a thirst quencher it is a great source of vitamin C and iron.

Consumption of guava juice helps in fighting constipation, prolonged menstruation, high blood pressure, congestion of lungs, high cholesterol levels, asthma, obesity and scurvy. It also purifies the blood.

Guava juice is a tremendous beverage with exotic fragrance, which can be used in puddings, bakery products, ice creams and yogurts.
