How to maintain healthy nails

December 30, 2008

None of us are so jobless as to visit our local manicurist twice a week. But, the fact is that, our nails do deserve close attention in such a frequent manner. Why not think of home manicure and be proud of your beautiful nails?

A straight-edged clipper is the most essential device that should be made part of your manicure kit. After every nail cut, extreme care should be taken to ensure that either filing or buffing is done to trim all the sharp edges. The edges can be shaped as either round or square.

Another important step to be taken care of while manicuring is regarding cuticle treatment. Fingertips need to be soaked in warm water for five minutes. Some fragrant essential oils can be added to this water tub. Nails should be traced with cuticle oil. An orange stick can be used to push the cuticles back. Daily massaging of the nail cuticles using a good quality nourishment formula is sure to have a positive impact on the nails.

Using your favourite lotion, massage the hands well. Shea butter or avocado will help in keeping your hands young and fresh. The lotion can be wiped off using cotton balls. A remover will help in removing the lotion remnants from nails. Nail polish will stick well on to the nails only if oil and lotion are well removed. Wait for a few minutes for the nails to be completely dried before applying the base coat of the polish.

It is always advisable to apply the main polish twice on the nail surface. You must not forget to apply a little extra polish on the nail tips to prevent it from chipping off easily. If you are in a hurry, a spray can be applied to let the colour set on the nails quickly. It is also important to ensure that your nails are in no way abused. It is a wrong practice to use your nail ends as tools to pick, poke or pry things.
