Dehydration is the situation in which body falls short of its water and mineral content. This happens through sweat, tears, urine and stool during the extreme hot season. When a person fall sick due to ailments such as fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, dehydration is likely to occur.
The body finds it hard to survive the increased loss of water and essential minerals such as sodium, potassium, calcium bicarbonate and phosphate. Whatever, be the cause, it is extremely important that dehydration gets treated as soon as possible. It is found that young children and older people are more vulnerable to suffer from dehydration.
The major symptoms of dehydration includes thirst, less-frequent urination, dry skin, increased fatigue, dizziness, palpitation etc. However, it should be kept in mind that the symptoms of dehydration vary from one person to another. Certain other symptoms exclusively found in dehydrated children include absence of tears and sunken eyes and lower tummy.
If detected early, dehydration is not hard to be treated. In case of mild dehydration, it is enough to provide the affected person with nutritious fluids and plenty of water. If the dehydration is moderate in nature, intravenous fluids are required. Through simple re-hydration methods, body can be easily brought back to normalcy.
However, taking precautionary measures is always better to avoid the harmful effects of dehydration. It is advisable to drink lots of water during days of hot sun. Staying indoors at midday, when the sun is at its powerful peak, will be highly beneficial.
It should be ensured Athletes who cannot avoid staying outdoors under the hot sun should see to it that electrolyte balance is well maintained by the intake of appropriate sports drink. If the symptoms of dehydration persist for more than a couple of days, it is extremely important that medical aid is obtained. It is advisable to prevent infants and tiny tots from heat exposure, especially when they are ill.
