How to stop a nosebleed in dogs

Nosebleeds in dogs are a common problem faced by pet lovers. This irregularity might occur due to a variety of reasons. This condition is medically known as epistaxis. It requires immediate vet care. Most likely, bleeding from the dog’s nose is due to the blade of grass that has got stuck in its nasal passage. But frequent nosebleeds might point to more severe internal ailments.
Nosebleeds in dogs can either be uni-lateral or bi-lateral in nature. This means, the bleeding might occur either from one nostril or from both the nostrils. Root tooth swelling often leads to uni-lateral bleeding in dogs. If it is a matter of loss of few drops of blood, there is not much to worry about. But, if the blood loss is more and if it is a heavy outward flow of blood, immediate aid should be provided to check the nose bleed effectively.
It is advisable to keep the bleeding dog as calm as possible. As the dog get anxious and move about, more likely it is to bleed profusely. Increased blood pressure within the animal will lead to increased flow. If possible, as a means of first aid, a cold pack should be applied on the nose bridge of the animal. Ensure that the cold compress is kept in place.
Special care is required to keep the dog pacified even after the nasal bleeding has ceased. This is important to prevent the clot that has formed within the nasal passage from bursting. If the dog starts to sneeze, it is practically impossible to stop nasal bleeding. In such a case, it is better to take the dog to a vet immediately.
Nasal tumors, nasal mites, trauma caused as an after effect of being hot by hard objects, ingestion of rat poison or rodents that have been poisoned, bleeding disorders etc are some of the common cause of nose bleeds in dogs.
