How to tackle the wheezing menace

February 23, 2009

Wheezing can be described as a high-pitched whistling sound that is associated with troubled breathing. It commonly occurs when a person tries to breathe deeply through air passages that have been blocked by excessive secretion of mucous. Wheezing is resulted when the free flow of air is restricted by narrowed passages. The main causes of wheezing include allergy, infection, illness and irritation.

It is during the process of letting out air, i.e., exhaling, that wheezing is more common. Rarely, the chest region gets slightly tightened after a severe wheezing session. Anxiety, caused as a result of diminished breathing rhythm, results in increased exertion of pressure on the muscles and makes the matters all the more worse. Drinking plenty of fruit juice, water, weak tea and broth are found to cure mild cases of wheezing.

It is always advisable to avoid cold drinks, if you happen to suffer from severe wheezing.
Wheezing is considered to be a characteristic symptom of asthma. In asthmatic patients, wheezing is mostly caused by exposure to allergens such as food particles, pollen, dust and such other substances. Fumes, ice-cold drinks, or very cold air can also make a person wheeze hard.

Certain medications, rigid exercise regimen, weather changes, foreign objects trapped in the airway, cystic fibrosis, and respiratory ailments such as pneumonia, congestive heart failure, bronchitis and emphysema can also lead to wheezing in asthma patients. Genetic disorders also play a major role in making a person sensitive to certain allergens. It is advisable to consult an allergist or a pulmonary specialist if the trouble persists for more than a week. Based on the type of the allergic reaction, skin and blood tests will be prescribed.

It is based on the particular nature of allergy that medicines get prescribed. A pulmonary function test is also done in some cases in order to get a better picture of the passage of air through the restricted breathing passages. X-rays helps in the diagnosis of respiratory ailments such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema.
