Osteoarthritis and Nutrition
Osteoarthritis is caused by the constant wearing away of joint cartilages. Mainly due to old age, the soft cartilage tissues get thinned and damaged. This causes the rough bones to rub together that might result in extreme pain and inflammation. Hips and knees are commonly affected by osteroarthritis. Generally, people consider it as a disease that can be cured only through heavy medicine dosages and therefore go after them. But, the fact is that osteoarthritris can be effectively controlled through lifestyle and diet changes.
Weight reduction is extremely important in the treatment of osteoarthritis. People who are obese should not attempt to bring down their weight by a sudden reduction in food intake. That will only worsen the situation. Instead try small meals, which are rich in nutritional content. The ideal diet for people with osteoarthritis is one that is alkaline in nature. This means more vegetables and fruits should be included in your daily diet. Cereals and dairy products should be consumed in lesser proportion. As far as possible, meat should be avoided completely. Fishes such as salmon and tuna will do good, as they are rich in omega fatty acids.
Sulphur containing foods will be highly beneficial as sulphur helps in the repair and reconstruction of bones and cartilages. Garlic, onion and eggs are rich in sulphur. People with osteoarthritis should avoid table salt, as sodium chloride is harmful to them. But sodium available in its natural form as in foods like celery can be consumed. Make sure that the iron needs of your body are met through your daily diet. There is no need to take iron through multimineral capsules unless you are anaemic. The required iron content will be supplied to your body by beetroot, peas and broccoli. Osteoartritis patients should make raw juices such as that of potatoes, pineapples, wheat grass and cabbage mixed with carrot an inevitable part of their daily diet.
