Home use kits measure a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. Though, these tests are qualitative; the results are also positive or negative for pregnancy.
The most sensitive test of pregnancy is best performed by a laboratory using a sample of your blood. These tests not only detect hCG but also can indicate the amount (quantitative tests) of the hormone that doubles every two to three days during the first several weeks of pregnancy. These more sensitive tests can tell how long you have been pregnant and even detect possible problems with the pregnancy. Your health care provider can perform this test.
At first, many women prefer the privacy, convenience, and quick results from home test kits. Home pregnancy tests are not as accurate as blood tests done by your health care provider. They also cannot determine if your pregnancy is developing as predictable.
The hormone hCG may be detected in urine about two weeks after conception (when the egg is fertilized by sperm).
The sensitivity of the pregnancy tests on the market today varies greatly. The more sensitive the test, the greater the chance it will pick up your pregnancy before your period is due. The lower the level of hcg picked up means the test is more sensitive. For example (from our pregnancy test comparison page) an Aimstick pregnancy test will detect 20 mIU of HCG where as a Fact plus Pregnancy Test will detect pregnancy at 150-250 mIU. This means the Aimstick brand will give you a positive result much sooner than the Fact Plus.
A test with the sensitivity of twenty mIU can pick up a pregnancy at six to eight days past ovulation but the percentage of women who get a positive this early on is comparatively low. A much higher percent of women get a positive result at nine or ten days past ovulation.
With the home test kit, you place a drop of your urine on a ready chemical strip. It usually takes one or two minutes for the strip to indicate the result.
