Reasons for pregnancy spotting

October 18, 2008

Pregnancy is a period of joyful anticipation. At the same time, you are always anxious and worried. Spotting during pregnancy can ring alarm bells for many expectant mothers. But in most cases, it can be quite normal. Apart from pelvic examination, blood tests and ultrasound scanning are done in order to find out the real cause of pregnancy bleeding.

Spotting during the first trimester of pregnancy is actually very common. There is absolutely no need to worry about this by associating it with miscarriage. Spotting is not necessarily a sign of miscarriage. In most cases, the bleeding stops soon and everything comes back to normal. Early pregnancy bleeding is mainly due to implantation. It is the process in which a fertilized egg gets implanted in the lining wall of uterus. However, if you notice prolonged bleeding, it should certainly be brought under the notice of your doctor. Ectopic pregnancy is a likely reason for continuous bleeding. Such a growth of the embryo in the fallopian tube is surely not safe for the mother. Molar pregnancy is yet another cause. Here, the bleeding is due to the formation of an abnormal mass within the uterus after fertilisation.

As pregnancy advances, the chances of bleeding come down. However, spotting after the thirteenth week of pregnancy is mainly due to “cervical erosion”. A fragile cervix causes this situation. Another reason for advanced pregnancy bleeding is the increased production of oestrogen, the female hormone. This situation is a bit risky for both mother and her baby. During the last phase of pregnancy, spotting occurs in some women as part of the body’s preparation for labour.

Severe and profuse bleeding demands immediate attention during the second and final trimesters, as it might be the result of placenta praevia. This might block the baby’s outward passage and might be dangerous. In such a situation, doctors go for Caesarean. If your due date of delivery has neared, then bleeding might also be an indication of the onset of labour.
