Role of iron in diet
Iron is an extremely important element, without which the functioning of the red blood cells is affected. The major component of a hemoglobin molecule is iron. Without the proper formation of hemoglobin, the vital function of transportation of oxygen to various cells will be impaired.
Hemoglobin supplies oxygen and return with carbon dioxide for expulsion. Iron also catalyses the action of many energy-producing enzymes. It acts as an anti-oxidant and is found to have many cancer-fighting properties.
Though it is true that a myriad of victuals are abundant in this element, the unfortunate fact is that many people fall sick due to iron deficiency. Statistics show that both children and adults are equally affected. In some people, the irregularity is due to the inefficient absorption of iron. In some others, it is due to the lack of this mineral in food.
The symptoms of iron deficiency are naturally associated with the oxygen and carbon dioxide transport. Children suffering from iron deficiency find it difficult to learn and memories things. The lack of oxygen makes the brain starved and its efficiency is negatively affected. It is advisable to check the iron level of your child starts exhibiting sudden behavioral disturbances.
Deficiency of iron leads to the disorder called anemia. Menstruating women are found to be under the increased risk of iron deficiency as they loss considerable amount of blood from the body periodically.
Other symptoms of iron deficiency include increased tiredness, fatigue, sleep irregularities, skin problems mostly paleness etc. In some people, lack of iron reserves affect the mental development.
Poor body temperature regulation; breathlessness and restlessness are yet other symptoms. Babies, less than two years of age who are formula fed are yet another vulnerable lot. Studies done in this regard indicate that babies who are fed on formula are found to be less efficient in absorbing iron, compared to breast fed babies.
