Role of omega-3 fatty acids in promoting health

Some experts consider the importance of fish oil consumption as second only to the intake of water and fresh vegetables. Fish oil is rich in certain elements that promote overall health. It helps in fighting diseases and thereby ensures longer life.

Fish oil is an exceptionally rich source of onega-3 fatty acids, a highly beneficial health component. These omega-3 fats are also found in cod liver oil. Unfortunately, the presence of these healthy omega-3 fatty acids is limited to certain victuals, where as that of the less beneficial Omega-6 fats are found in many oils.

Omega 3 helps in preventing many coronary ailments. It is also found to be effective in fighting diseases such as cancer, depression, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, ulcers, diabetes, hyperactivity etc. Omega 3 is also found to enhance a person’s concentration skills.It also boosts our overall energy level.

While a helpful form of Omega-3 is also found in flaxseed, walnuts and a few other foods, some other beneficial forms of Omega-3 – containing 2 fatty acids are found only n fish. EPA and DHA, found in fish oil help in curing many mental ailments.

It is advisable to stick to fish oil capsules as the consumption of both naturally-caught and farm-raised fish varieties are becoming increasingly dangerous due to the high level of toxic, tasteless metal, mercury present in them. It is advisable for children, older people and women to include fish oil in their daily diet. Some people consider cod liver oil as a better source of nutrients as it is rich in vitamin D as well.

An additional way to increase the intake of omega 3 fats in your diet is to use freshly ground flax seeds. No longer do you have to be afraid of the health hazards caused by improperly processed fish oil. Flavored cod liver oil and fish oil with much more pleasing taste are increasingly made available.
