Symptoms of Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium termed Chlamydia trachomatis. Any person who is sexually active can be infected with chlamydia. But, greater the number of sex partners, more increased is the possibility of infection. This disorder damages the female reproductive organs and in men, it results in discharge from the penis. In most cases, this disease goes unnoticed since the symptoms are mild or even absent. But Chlamydia is notorious for making a woman irreversibly infertile even before she recognises the problem.
Chlamydia is a disease that gets transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. This factor makes this disease common among homosexuals as well. During childbirth, an infected mother is also likely to pass the infection to her baby. Sexually active teenage girls are more likely to be infected since their immature cervix is more vulnerable to infection. Since the symptoms rarely get expressed, it is commonly referred to as a “silent” disease. If the symptoms do occur, they get manifested within three weeks of exposure. Abnormal vaginal discharge and a burning sensation when urinating are the major symptoms.
In women, cervix and the urethra (urine canal) are the initially affected organs. Slowly, the infection spreads from the cervix to the fallopian tubes. Even when these tubes are affected, symptoms might not be obvious in some women. Where as in certain other cases, infection in fallopian tubes result in low back pain, nausea, fever, pain during sexual intercourse, lower abdominal pain etc. Spotting in between the periods is also a common symptom.
In men, symptoms of Chlamydia include itching around the opening of the penis and a burning sensation while passing urine. Pain and inflammation on the testicles are also found in some cases. Both men and women, who received the infection as part of anal sex, are likely to develop rectal pain and bleeding. If it is oral sex with an infected partner that has caused the disease, throat pain is likely.
