Treatments for Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety disorders are real, serious, and treatable. Experts believe that anxiety disorders are caused by a combination of biological and environmental factors, much like other disorders, such as heart disease and diabetes.

Have you been diagnosed with panic disorder and are wondering how your doctor came to that conclusion? Or maybe you haven’t talked to a health professional yet, but you are sure what you’re experiencing is a panic attack. Or perhaps you know someone with panic disorder and you’d like to learn more about it.

Learning the basics of panic disorder can help you better understand the condition and those who have panic disorder. The vast majority of people with an anxiety disorder can be helped with professional care. Success of treatment varies among people. Some may respond to treatment after a few months, while others may need more than a year. Treatment is sometimes complicated by the fact that people very often have more than one anxiety disorder or suffer from depression or substance abuse. This is why treatment must be tailored to the individual.

Antidepressants, mild tranquilizers, and other anti-anxiety drugs are often used to treat anxiety disorders. There are several choices of medication in each drug class. If one drug does not provide expected results, another drug can be prescribed. Because medications often require several weeks to achieve their full effect, patients should have their progress monitored by a physician to determine if a change in dosage, another drug, or a combination of drugs is required.

Some of the important treatments for anxiety disorder

Behavior Therapy

The goal of behavior therapy is to modify and gain control over unwanted behavior. The individual learns to cope with difficult situations, often through controlled exposure to them. This kind of therapy gives a sense of having control over one’s life.

Cognitive Therapy

The goal of cognitive therapy is to change unproductive or intrusive thought patterns. The individual examines his or her feelings and learns to separate realistic from unrealistic thoughts. As with behavior therapy, the individual is actively involved in his or her own recovery and has a sense of control.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Many therapists use a combination of cognitive and behavior therapies, which is often referred to as CBT. One of the benefits of these types therapies is that the patient learns recovery skills that are useful for a lifetime.

1. Raw almonds that are easily found in your cupboard, or in the supermarket, can be used to ease and relax you from an anxiety attack. Soak 10 pieces of almonds in water overnight to soften the skin and the nuts. Peel off the skin and blend the almonds in 1 cup of warm milk in a blender. Add a pinch of nutmeg and a pinch of ground ginger. Drink the almond and milk mixture before going to bed to help relieve from anxiety. This also helps you relax and have a good night’s sleep.

2. Prepare a warm bath by using 3 cups of baking soda and 1/3 cup of grated ginger. Indulge yourself in this aromatic bath for 15 minutes to relieve your anxiety and tension. Soak and relax for a few more minutes if you need to.

3. If you have folic acid or potassium deficiency, anxiety is one of the common symptoms that are manifested through nervousness and tension.
