Types of Pink Eyes

All of us might have encountered with the problems caused by Pink eyes. Also called as Conjunctivitis, Pink eyes is a common eye ailment. It is characterised by the inflammation of conjunctiva, the membrane found in the white portion of the eyes. The root reason behind Pink Eyes is mainly bacterial or viral in nature. Other allergies also lead to this disorder. Though it will not pose serious threats, bacterial eye infection should be treated, as only proper medication will cure it completely. Conjunctivitis easily spreads from one person to another. Irritation, itches and reddened eyes are the major symptoms of Pink eyes. Tearing is yet another symptom. Eyes shed tears seeking for help. Sticky discharge, greenish yellow in colour, is also found in some cases.
Viruses that creep into the eyes from other ailments such as cold and other respiratory infections cause viral conjunctivitis. Bacteria such as staphylococci and streptococci, that some how makes their way into the eyes cause bacterial conjunctivitis. Allergic Conjunctivitis is the outcome of eyes’ reaction to distinctive substances such as fumes, drugs, dust, certain cosmetics, chemicals etc. People who are more prone to various allergies are under constant threat of conjunctivitis.
From the symptoms we can make out the nature of the infection caused. Greenish eye discharge indicates that the infection is bacterial in kind. This discharge might even bring together both the eyelids, and the person might find it difficult to open his eyes. If only one eye is infected, it is likely to have a viral cause. Heavy tearing is found in allergic conjunctivitis. This kind of conjunctivitis is not contagious. However, the general symptoms such as itchiness, reddening and irritation are common to all forms of this eye disease. People with bacterial or viral conjunctivitis should not share towels, pillows and such other items with others as it may lead to instant transfer of germs.
