What are intrauterine contraceptive devices IUDs
Intrauterine contraceptive device generally refers to a small soft T-shaped device with a nylon string attached to it. This device is inserted into the uterus of a woman with the aim of preventing pregnancy. Though it is commonly T-shaped, IUDs, can be shaped like a coil, loop or triangle. The device can be made of either plastic or metal.
It is advisable to consult a gynecologist to ensure the safe and precise placement of IUDs. The period of replacement of these devices vary. While some of them should be replaced every year, some other needs to be taken out of the body only after ten years. Intrauterine contraceptive devices help in preventing contraception by blocking the merging of sperm and egg.
Based on how they work in preventing pregnancy, intrauterine contraceptive device are classified as copper and hormonal. Sperm cells are either immobilized as they make their way to the fallopian tubes or the uterine lining is altered so as to prevent the fertilized egg cells from getting implanted on its inner walls.
IUDs are found to be an extremely popular means of contraception. For mutually monogamous couple who are not likely to be infected, Intrauterine contraceptive device remains to be the most safest and convenient mode of preventing pregnancy. Whenever the woman is ready to become pregnant, the device can be removed. It is found to be a suitable mode of prevention by many women as there is no need to keep track of daily pills.
Though serious complications are not likely, it is found that women with pelvic inflammatory disease are mostly those who are using IUD as their tool of contraception. Other side effects include perforation of the uterus, abnormal bleeding and cramps.
Complications generally occur immediately after the insertion of the device into the womb. Some women experience headaches, breast tenderness, acne, weight changes and mood swings during the first few days of insertion.
