What are oral cysts

Cyst generally relates to a benign cavity that is spotted beneath the skin or within bone. The cavity can either be empty or filled partially or completely with a certain fluid. Cysts generally are harmless until they are infected.
Oral cysts are found in the jawbones or in one of the salivary glands. It can also appear in the gums and lips and also in the tissues that surrounds the mouth and face. Cysts that are found in the jawbone and are lined with epithelium cover are often called “odontogenic cysts.”
Odontogenic jaw cysts have the potential to grow larger. In such a case, the concerned teeth will have to be removed, or else problems with biting food are likely.
A relatively large odontogenic cyst often weakens the jaw. In some cases, jaw fractures are also resulted. The damaged jaw becomes inflamed, infected and surely painful.
Odontogenic keratocyst is a particular type of odontogenic cyst which is more aggressive in its growth pattern. Such cysts are more difficult to be treated and cured.
People with an inherited condition called basal cell nevus syndrome are found to be more prone to develop such oral cysts.
A cyst that develops within the soft tissues of the mouth often appears as small, painless bumps. Such cysts are formed either beneath the skin of the inner lower lip or within the cheeks. Rarely, they develop in the gums as well.
An odontogenic jaw cyst that is small and painless often remains unnoticed. Only when it gets infected and causes the jaw bone to bulge out that it becomes painful.
In most cases, cysts are removed surgically. It is usually done by dentists after administering local anesthesia.
If the cyst is infected, it is wise to take antibiotics before the surgery in order to avoid further complications. It is advisable to consult your dentist if you notice either painful or painless swelling within your mouth, near to your jaw.
