What are razor bumps
Razor bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis barbae, are those small skin irritations that develop soon after a close shave. They are better described as tiny skin bumps. They are formed as strands of hair that curl back on themselves and start growing into the skin.
Razor bumps often lead to the development of other skin irregularities such as pimples. They might cause scarring as well. Razor bumps are found to be more common on the skin of those people with tightly coiled facial hair.
In order to treat razor bumps, it is important to use a clean needle that releases the embedded hair shaft. It is also advisable to stop shaving till the skin is completely cured. But the menace is likely to make an even stronger comeback after your next shave.
Since shaving is found to trigger the development of razor bumps, it is a wise step to try hair removal products instead of shaving. But these hair removal products are likely to cause irritation on sensitive skin.
It is advisable to use such alternatives less frequently, say, once or twice a week. Laser treatment is the next possible option. Laser treatment destroys the hair follicles from within and thereby effectively reduces the occurrence of razor bumps.
However, it is found that strict adherence to a few shaving tips brings down the number of razor bumps. It is advisable to take a hot shower before shaving. Hot water softens the facial tissues and helps in opening up the skin pores. Using a thick shaving gel is also found to be beneficial in preventing the occurrence of razor bumps.
It is better not to stretch the skin hard while shaving. Make sure that you are shaving your beard in the direction of its growth. It is better to make as few razor strokes as possible. Rinsing should be done with cold water alone. Never forget to apply a good quality moisturizing lotion immediately after shaving.
