What are the different kinds of skin burns
Accidents are likely to happen to us all. It is essential that we are all well-equipped to manage such situations. Heat, fire, radiation, sunlight, electricity and chemicals can cause burns on our body. Burns are generally classified into three.
First-degree burns are those that turn red and are very painful. They do not get swelled much. As the affected skin is pressed, it turns white. Generally, the burned skin gets peeled off within a couple of days. First-degree burns are usually found to heal completely within six days.
Second-degree burns are thicker burns and are commonly referred to as blisters. The affected skin is reddened. It will be extremely painful and the burnt skin will get swelled as well. Second-degree burns usually take three weeks to heal fully.
Third-degree burns are more severe as all the inner layers of the skin are damaged in this case. The burned skin looks as if it is charred. However, pain is less when compared to the other two kinds of burns as in this case, the entire nerves in the region have been battered by extreme heat. Third-degree burns usually take a longer period to heal.
The first-aid that should be provided to burns depends upon the extent of damage caused and the affected location. First and second degree burns are generally not very serious. However, if the first- or second-degree burns cover an area that is larger than three inches in diameter, it is advisable to seek medical aid. Moreover, any burn that occur on your face, hands, feet or genitals, should be brought under a doctor’s notice immediately. Third-degree burns surely require emergency medical help.
It is not a good idea to apply butter, oil, ice or ice water on burns. This will only lead to more skin damage.
Itching on the burned skin is a positive sign of healing. However, it should be ensured that the burned skin is not scratched open.
