What are the different types of pregnancy rashes
It is quite common for women to develop skin rashes after delivery. Pregnancy related rashes mainly fall under four categories. These rashes occur only during the gestation period and are often characterized by severe itchiness.
Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP) are the most common rashes that occur during the pregnancy period. These rashes make its appearance in the form of small bumps that stands raised from the skin surface. These are generally spotted within the stretch marks that appear on the lower abdominal area. It is estimated that more than half of all the pregnant women are likely to develop this kind of ashes.
Prurigo of pregnancy is yet another kind of rash that is often associated with abnormal hormone levels in the blood. Increased levels of gonadotropins and lower levels of cortisol and estrogen lead to the development of such rashes. This is also found to be an extremely common phenomenon, associated with pregnancy.
Pruritic folliculitis of pregnancy is also similar to the above mentioned condition. The features shared by the two rashes are so similar that some experts do not even make distinction between the two. Pruritic folliculitis mostly affects the trunk of a woman’s body. Pemphigoid gestationis is another rare blistering disease that affects pregnant women.
Sometimes, pregnant women experience severe itching that is not accompanied by the formation of rashes. This condition is known as intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy.
Such irritations on the skin surface might point to liver dysfunction. Some women with mild jaundice are found to experience itching on the skin surface. In such cases, yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes are also seen.
Immediate medical aid should be sought in such instances as it might turn out to be fatal for the fetus. In most cases, pregnant women are found to get some relief from itching after a soothing bath.
