What causes Bacterial vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis or simply vaginitis refers to inflammation that occurs in the vagina. Bacterial vaginosis is an extremely common irregularity that is likely to affect the female population at any given period of their lives. Many women mistakenly believe that yeast infections are the most common kind of vaginal infection but the fact is that bacterial vaginosis is mostly found type of vaginal infection.
With the precise treatment at the right time, bacterial vaginosis can be cured within no time. But, if left untreated, it makes a woman prone to disorders such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometritis, cervicitis etc. It has been found that in a pregnant woman affected with bacterial vaginosis, pregnancy complications and post-operative infections are likely.
Bacterial vaginosis mostly affects a woman during her reproductive years. However, all women are vulnerable to this infection that involves the genital parts such as vagina, urethra, bladder, and skin that covers the genital area.
The primary cause of bacterial vaginosis is an increase in the growth of anaerobic bacteria and the Gardnerella organism. These microbes are present in a healthy vagina as well. But in that case, it is kept under control by a beneficial kind of bacteria termed Lactobacilli, which acts as a natural disinfectant. A rapid growth of the infectious microbes disrupts the vaginal balance.
E. coli, a rectal inhabitant, is found to be the major cause of bacterial vaginitis. Other than the spread of E.coli to the vagina, factors such as tremendously hot weather, poor health, poor hygiene, use of an intrauterine devices as means of birth control, and routine vaginal douching also lead to this disorder.
It has been found that the risk of a woman to be infected with this disease increases as she attains menopause. Diabetic women and those in whom the immunity system has been weakened due to some or other reason are more prone to develop bacterial vaginosis.
