What causes chanchroid
Chancroid is a sexually transmitted disease that is spread by bacteria. This disease is found to be more common in tropical parts of the world. Any person who is sexually active is likely to be transmitted with this disease. However, studies indicate that this ailment is more common in men, when compared to women. Uncircumcised men are found to be more prone to this disorder.
Direct sexual contact with an infected individual leads to this disorder. The remnants of a previous injury present on the sexual areas such as a bruise, scratch or a cut serve as doorways, which makes the entry of the infectious germs easier. A person who is sexually active and does not follow the basic rules of personal sexual hygiene is more likely to be infected by chancroid.
The initial sign of chancroid infection is the appearance of one or more sores or raised bumps on the genital organs. A narrow red colored border generally surrounds these sores. Pus often fills up this red border. It gradually burst out and this stage is found to be extremely painful. It is extremely important that these open sores are brought under doctor’s notice.
If left untreated, the chancroid bacteria will infect the lymph glands in the groin within no time. With in a couple of weeks of infection, the glands on one or both sides of the groin will become enlarged and hard. A rounded painful swelling is also found in some cases.
Symptoms of this ailment are usually seen within seven days of exposure to infectious microbes. Chancroid is contagious as long as the infected person carries open sores in his body. These open sores serve as breeding ground of bacteria and any contact with the infectious sores ultimately leads to infection.
Untreated chancroid might also result in the formation of ulcers on the genitals. Proper antibiotic treatment at the right time is found to be effective incurring this disorder.
