What causes chest infection
A chest infection relates to an irregularity that has affected our airways. The infection interferes with the normal functioning of the internal respiratory organs such as the lungs. In its general sense, ‘chest infection’ envelops a number of respiratory ailments such as pneumonia and bronchitis. A high temperature is often associated with both the diseases.
Normally, chest infection gets epitomized in the form of cough, which often brings up phlegm or thick mucus deep from the inner chest. Common cold also leads to cough, but in this case the infection is limited to the nose and throat with less severe consequences. Chest infection is found to be more common during the autumn and winter months.
Pneumonia is comparatively less common form of chest infection. It is essential to provide the patient suffering from mild pneumonia with appropriate medical aid. If left untreated, it can potentially be very serious. Acute bronchitis is due to viral infection within the bronchial lining of the lungs.
This disorder is normally followed by a cold or flu. Smoking makes a person increasingly prone to this infection. Apart from persistent cough, wheezing, dry mouth, breathlessness upon exertion, headache, and loss of appetite are also seen in people suffering from acute bronchitis. It is important to ensure that the affected person does not get dehydrated.
In case of pneumonia, the tiny air sacs present inside the lungs get inflamed and filled with fluid. Pneumonia is usually the after effect of bacterial infection. Rarely, certain kinds of virus are also found to cause this disease. It is advisable to check the spread of disease by following hygienic practices such as covering the mouth well as you cough or sneeze.
It is also important to wash the hands regularly. The used facial tissues should be thrown away immediately. Fatigue, nausea, vomiting, joint and muscle pains, blue shade on the skin surface, palpitation etc are the common symptoms of pneumonia.
