What causes fever blisters

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) causes fever blisters. This virus gets transmitted from one person to another by direct contact with the infected skin. Infected oral secretions such as saliva can also lead to this disorder. The sores, which are the characteristic feature of this disorder, usually appear as clusters of tiny blisters on the lip. Sometimes, blisters similar to ulcers in appearance pop up within the roof of the mouth.
The first instance of HSV-1 invasion on the skin is termed as primary infection. It usually occurs in childhood or early adolescence. The major symptoms of this disorder include fever, sore mouth and sore throat. In some people, headache, nausea, vomiting, painful swelling within the cheeks etc are also found. The symptoms of primary infection are often similar to viral and bacterial throat infections.
After this primary infection subsides, the virus attains a dormant stage for an indefinite period. However, it is likely to become active and lead to the formation of active sores again, mostly on the lips. These sores are known as cold sores since the virus can be reactivated by a cold or fever. The initial signs of cold sore include a vague tingling, burning or itching feeling, followed by swelling and redness.
The presence of certain other factors such as stress, trauma to the lips, exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, menstruation and suppression of the immune system are also likely to worsen the health situation and reactivate the virus. In some people, it might reoccur for no obvious reason.
Apart from oral infections, HSV-1 sometimes gets transferred to other body parts such as the eyes, the skin of the fingers, the genital area and elsewhere. HSV-1 is found to cause severe health concerns in people who are infected with other ailments such as those related with malnutrition. People with cancer and other diseases that weaken the immune system are more prone to this disorder.
