If you are forced to change your pads twice in every hour or if your periods happen to last longer than one week, then you are likely to experience menorrhagia.
Hormonal imbalance is found to be the most common cause of heavy menstrual bleeding. Hormonal fluctuations are more likely to occur either during adolescence or during the onset of the menopause stage. It is advisable to provide hormonal treatment in such cases.
Uterine fibroid tumors are another common cause of excessive bleeding. Being detected with fibroids inside the uterus is not a reason to worry as most of such tumours are non-cancerous in nature. Cervical polyps are small, fragile growths that begin their growth in either the mucosal surface of the cervix or within the endocervical canal. They often protrude through the opening of the cervix. The cause of cervical polyps is not clear, but they are found to lead to profuse menstrual bleeding. Women over the age of twenty and those who have had children are found to be more prone to this disorder.
Endometrial polyps form yet another reason for severe menstrual flow. They are typically non-cancerous in nature and protrude from the lining of the uterus. The cause of endometrial polyps is associated with excessive oestrogen secretion, mostly as a consequence of hormone treatment.
