What causes lichen planus

Lichen planus is a commonly occurring mucocutaneous disease. However, lichen planus is usually associated with oral and genital involvement. In normal cases, a patient who is diagnosed with oral lichen planus is routinely advised to undergo further medical examination in order to get a clearer picture of the putative genital mucosal involvement.
The lesions formed by lichen planus are likely to be developed as neoplasia. The inside walls of the cheeks is the mostly involved body part, with intertwining white streaks making a pattern that is similar to a spider web in appearance.
Lichen planus can be described as an inflammatory disease that affects the skin and the oral mucosa. This disorder get manifested in the form of lesions or rashes on the skin surface in the affected parts. However, lichen planus does not involve lichens and the name is derived from the appearance of affected skin.
The root cause of lichen planus is yet to be known.
This skin disorder is not contagious in nature. It does not invlove the presence of any pathogen. The lichenoid rashes are the result of allergic reactions. Specific medications meant for high blood pressure, heart disease and arthritis generally lead to lichen planus-type rashes.
These lichenoid reactions are generally termed as lichenoid mucositis (of the mucosa) or dermatitis (of the skin). An instance of lichen planus infection gets complicated if it occurs after severe hepatitis C virus infection. A person who suffers from intense mental stress is also likley to develop similar lesions on the skin surface. Studies indicate that lichen planus affects women more than men. Middle-aged adults are found to be more prone to this disorder.
However, this autoimmune skin irregularity may occur at any age.Researchers also suspect the possibility of any association between lichen planus lesions and hypothyroidism. It has been found that people with oral lesions rarely develop skin lesions.
