What is an eye styet
Stye refers to a small and painful boil. It occurs in the eye when hair follicles get inflamed. Inflammation commonly happens when the sebaceous gland present in the edge of the eyelid get infected. The infection is usually caused by staphylococcus bacteria. However, some children seem to be more prone to stye infections than others.
Other irregularities associated with sties include swelling, redness, pain and warmth.
The infection results in the blockage of the hair follicles on the eyelids. The infection spreads easily from one hair shaft to another. The pace of the infection gets all the more increased when the affected eyelids are rubbed constantly to get relief from itching.
Children with wrong eating habits are more likely to be infected. Consumption of foods like boiled potatoes, pudding, pies, white bread, refined cereals, and confectionery makes a child more prone to the infection. The symptoms of the disease get manifested when the child’s immunity level is low. Eye stye gets initially reported as an instance of eye strain.
The throbbing pain experienced as a result of stye might become intolerable. The onset of pain occurs even before the stye makes its appearance. In some children the infection makes a quick decline without leading to redness or swelling.
As the stye bursts up after a few days of pain, pus like fluid is discharged. This fluid makes the eyelids stick together. Many people stick to home remedies in order to reduce the resultant pain and swelling. If the pain does not get reduced even after a couple of weeks, surgical drainage of the stye might become necessary. It is not a good idea to rely on home remedies alone if the swelling does not decrease within a couple of days. Maintenance of proper eye hygiene is considered to be the most effective preventive measure that can be done against eye styes. Always ensure that your hands are washed clean before bringing them in contact with the eyes.
