What is frozen shoulder
Frozen shoulder is medically described as adhesive capsulitis. It is a condition that results in restricted shoulder movement. The root cause of this disorder is not fully known as it occurs without any obvious reason in most cases. Frozen shoulder makes the capsule that surrounds the ball and socket of the shoulder joint to contract considerably.
This leads to the formation of scar tissue that damages the shoulder joint. These bands of scar tissue are called as adhesions. For some reason or other, a person finds that his shoulder joint becomes stiff and scarred. Normally, shoulder joint is one body part which allows utmost motion. But, in a patient with frozen shoulder disorder, the free movement gets strictly hindered. The joint gets stiffened and becomes extremely painful when moved.
In most cases, frozen shoulder occurs immediately after a
traumatic injury that happens to the shoulder. However, certain risk factors are also found to affect the occurrence of frozen shoulders. These factors are found to make a person more prone to this disorder.
Frozen shoulder commonly affects a person who is in the age group of forty and sixty. Compared to men, women are more likely to develop this disorder. Patients with diabetes are found to be at an increased risk for developing this irregularity. Other abnormalities in the functioning of the endocrine system such as thyroid problems are also found to lead to this disorder.
Patients who have already sustained a shoulder injury or have undergone one or more surgeries on their shoulder are also found to be more prone to develop this problem. If a person happens to suffer from prolonged joint immobilization as a consequence of surgery, he or she is under increased risk of developing a frozen shoulder.
Studies indicate that certain coronary ailments and old-age related disorders such as Parkinson’s disease greatly increases a person’s chance of developing frozen shoulder disorder.
