Gastro esophageal reflux disease relates to the disorder that is caused by the backward movement of the stomach acid into the esophagus. Gastro esophageal reflux disease, GERD for short, usually occurs as a result of some irregularity in the functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter.
The stomach acid tends to move backwards when this muscular valve located at the point where the esophagus joins the stomach opens at the wrong time or does not close correctly.
It is quite common for a person to develop gastro-esophageal reflux. In most cases, one does not even realize what is happening during this attack. The ingestion of the stomach acid into the esophagus is characterized by a severe burning sensation, which is called as heartburn. Though not a cause of serious concern,
The reflux of stomach acid is likely to damage the tissue lining within the esophagus. This results in the inflammation of the inner walls of the esophagus and pain is resulted. In adults, untreated gastro esophageal reflux disease is likely to cause permanent damage of the esophagus in the long run.
The root cause behind gastro-esophageal reflux remains unknown. However, it is generally found that a full stomach makes a person more prone to this disorder. When the stomach is starched to the maximum, lower esophageal sphincter valve is prevented from performing its function effectively.
People suffering from hiatal hernia are also under the threat of gastro-esophageal reflux disorder. Certain factors such as obesity, alcohol consumption and pregnancy are found to make a person more prone to this irregularity. Certain victuals and medications taken against some ailments are also found to worsen gastro esophageal reflux disease.
Studies in this regard indicate that food materials such as citrus fruits, chocolate, caffeine-based drinks, fatty and fried foods, garlic and onions, mint flavorings, extremely spicy foods, tomato-based sauces etc lead to gastro-esophageal reflux disorder. The best mode of prevention that can be taken against gastro esophageal reflux disease is keeping away from such food materials.
