What is implantable contraception

April 7, 2009

Implantable contraception refers to a small, flexible plastic tube that contains hormones with the potential to prevent pregnancy.  It gets inserted within the skin of the upper arm. The inserted hormones protect the concerned woman from pregnancy for the prescribed period.

Generally, this mode of contraception is used for preventing pregnancy for a period of three years. Once inserted, the matchstick-sized flexible tube needs to be left in place for getting the desired result.

The implanted tube gradually releases low levels of the hormone progestin in to the body. This hormone brings the process of ovulation under control.  When the mature egg does not get released, pregnancy is surely prevented.

The released progestin also thickens the cervical mucus. This ensures that there is no possibility of the sperm entering the uterus. Moreover, to be doubly sure, the uterus lining is also thinned in order to prevent the attachment of the fertilised egg, if any.

It is found to be an extremely effective mode of contraception. Studies indicate that only one out of every hundred women who use this method falls pregnant. However, the chance of a woman to fall pregnant increases considerably if she does not replace the instrument after three years of use. It is therefore important to keep a strict record of when the tubes have been inserted.

Possible side effects that are found in women who use this mode of contraception include irregular or no menstrual periods, weight gain, severe headaches, acne and breast tenderness. Irritation and possible scarring on the spots where the tubes are inserted are also seen in some people.

The intensity of some of these disorders is found to subside with the passage of time. It is found that smoking cigarettes while using implantable contraception greatly increase a woman’s risk of developing most of these side effects. This is exactly why most of the gynaecologists advise those women who use this mode of birth control to quit smoking for better results.
