What is Lyme disease
Lyme disease is a condition that is characterised by the presence of diverse symptoms. Often it gets misdiagnosed as certain other disorders. Infectious arthritis is found to be a secondary consequence of Lyme disease. Nervous disorders and circulatory irregularities are yet other after effects of Lyme disease during the advanced stages.
The initial localized stage of Lyme disease is mainly characterized by erythema migrans. These are a kind of skin rashes that appear after about three days from the day of bite. In some people, it takes weeks for the rashes to appear fully. The small rashes slowly grow in diameter, and might even come to 10 inches.
The infection gradually spread to other body parts as well and lead to the formation of multiple skin rashes. Other symptoms that are seen in this stage include fever, joint pain, muscle pain, headaches etc. Some people suffer from circulatory and nervous disorders as well.
Late stage infection can lead to chronic arthritis. It is based on the particular stage of infection that various symptoms get developed. Pauciarticular arthritis, that commonly affects four joints, is found to be the most common problem that is associated with late-stage Lyme disease. Most patients are found to respond positively towards antibiotic medication.
Lyme disease is caused by the transmission of the infectious bacteria that is termed as Borrelia burgdorferi. These infectious microbes usually dwell within the infected ticks. They slowly move towards the mouthpart of the tick and gets injected into the skin. People who spend a lot of leisure time outdoors in tick-infested wooded areas are found to be more prone to the attack.
Campgrounds and other thick forest areas are found to be a breeding ground of this infectious micro organism. The infection is likely to be at its peak during late spring and early summer. However, rare cases of lyme disease infection are reported during the fall season as well.
