What is Norplant
Norplant is a progestin-based contraceptive that was introduced in 1990. It is an implant that need to be worn for a period of five years. However, the availability of this hormonal birth control measure varies from one region to another. It is no longer made available in certain countries like the United States.
Norplant consists of six tiny silicone rods that are filled with progestin. These progestin rods get implanted under the skin of the upper arm. They are left there for as long as five years. The implant procedure is relatively a simple one and takes roughly ten minutes.
Norplant starts its function after a day of implantation. The implants gradually release the hormone in them into the body. This released progestin thickens the cervical mucus and thereby denies entry to sperm cells. The ovulation pattern also gets jeopardized. The uterus is also prevented from nurturing the fertilized egg in its inner walls.
The greatest advantage of this mode of contraception is its prolonged protection. Safe sex is claimed for a period of five years. However, breast-feeding mothers are not supposed to use these contraceptive rods. Its ban in some countries is due to the severity of side effects experienced by some women. Women who currently have Norplant implants may continue to use it, but is advisable for them to stick to some other mode of contraception once the hormone rods are removed.
The extent of side effects are found to be slightly higher in case of Norplant users, when compared to those who opt for other contraceptive measures. The most commonly found side effects include menstrual disturbances and related irregularities, headaches, increased acnes, weight gain, nausea, anxiety, unwanted hair growth and ovarian cysts.
A woman who uses Norplant is also likely to develop ectopic pregnancy, which relates to development of the foetus within the fallopian tubes. If left untreated, this condition can be extremely fatal.
