What is peripheral artery disease
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a health disorder that is similar to coronary artery disease and carotid artery disease in manner of occurrence. In the case of a person affected with peripheral artery disease, fatty deposits starts getting accumulated within the inner linings of the artery walls.
The development of this blockage prevents proper blood circulation to vital internal organs such as stomach and kidney and also to the arms, legs and feet. The initial symptom of this irregularity is severe cramping of legs. In some cases, a person feels as if the lower part of his body is becoming weakened suddenly.
The cramping feeling will get better if the person stands still for some time. In people affected with peripheral artery disease, the fatty build up also occurs within the major arteries that supply blood to the brain and heart as well. That is why it is said that people with PAD are at increased risk of death from stroke and heart attack.
Peripheral artery disease usually gets diagnosed after a close examination of the person’s medical history. Physical exam, ultrasound, X-ray angiography and magnetic resonance imaging angiography etc are also done in order to get a more precise picture of the patient’s condition.
Both lifestyle changes and medication will have to be administered as part of the treatment. It is advisable to stop smoking as the inhalation of the cigarette fumes make a person moiré prone to this disorder. It should be ensured that both diabetes and blood pressure of the affected person in kept well under control.
The diet of a patient affected with peripheral artery disease should strictly be low in saturated fat and cholesterol content.
In a minority of patients, angioplasty or surgery may be necessary to rectify the disorder. Surgery is mainly done if a longer portion of the arterial walls have been narrowed. In this case, a vein from some other part of the body or a synthetic blood vessel is used to detour blood around the affected spot.
